Leeds United’s academy has gone from strength to strength in the past few years, with several players looking to break through into a high senior level, including Jacob Howard.

United have a great deal of senior international players out on duty this month, but there are a number also taking to the youth squads too.

Scott Gardner’s U21 side have a handful turning out for the likes of England, Wales, Northern Ireland and Australia over the coming days.

Leeds United teen Jacob Howard features again for England U17

Amongst those out on duty is centre-back Jacob Howard. Impressively, Howard has again been called into the extremely talented England U17 setup.

On Wednesday, the Young Lions hosted the Faroe Islands and cruised to a 3-0 win. Howard, though, featured in midfield as goals from Chelsea’s Ryan Kavuma-McQueen and Blackburn’s Harvey Higgins settled this U17 European Championship qualifier.

Former Leeds youngster Oliver Boast assisted the third. But, with Howard completing a full 90 amidst some of the brightest talents in the country, while playing in a more advanced role, the signs are incredibly encouraging.

Howard turns 17 on Sunday, and as a result, he will be eligible to sign a professional contract as Leeds surely look to scare off any potential suitors.

Leeds United could have another Thorp Arch gem developing in Jacob Howard

He’s obviously got some way to go before becoming the star that we hope he does. But, Howard being in the England setup amongst some seriously impressive names, while playing a full 90, is great to see.

At the age of 16, he’s been taken out of the U18 setup and thrust into U21 action. I would imagine the club have incredibly high hopes for Howard.

The next task is ensuring he has a professional contract wrapped up as soon as possible before we continue to develop him.
