The race is a national competition attended by schools and clubs and is called a Scullery because it promotes a form of rowing where each athlete has two oars, rather than one.

Just six weeks ago, Brentford had no boats, no access to the water and no gym space. Its young athletes have maintained their fitness by training in parks and on the streets.

With support from Hounslow Council, they have a new home in Dukes Meadows, where the Old Chiswick Boathouse stood.

The site had not been used for five years, so the young athletes (and some of their parents) had to clear all the weeds and mud to restore the old slipway.

They were given or loaned boats and equipment, which meant they were were able to compete at the Scullery Head.

Brentford Boat Club has nearly 90 members, from 30 different schools.

It entered 56 rowers and five coxes at the event.
