Leicester City have been dealt hammer blows in their bid to avoid a relegation play-off at the end of the Women’s Super League season over the last couple of weeks.
After a break from action, City faced Liverpool in a six-pointer, but were on the end of a 2-0 away loss.
They looked on course to bounce back this weekend when Alisha Lehmann’s first-half goal put them 1-0 up against Aston Villa at the King Power Stadium. But an equaliser from Anna Patten and then Kirsty Hanson’s late winner condemned them to their 12th loss of the season.
The two results have only piled on the worry that City could face an end-of-season play-off clash to try and save their WSL status.
To avoid that, it seems that the team have a stronger test than what they have faced in their battles against relegation in previous seasons.
In two of the past six campaigns, City would already have enough points to guarantee that they don’t finish bottom, but it seems that it’s going to take quite a lot more than average this time around. While it’s not good news for City, it shows the league’s growing quality throughout – and not just in the top few positions.
Just two seasons ago, in 2023/24, their current nine points would have seen them finish above bottom-placed Bristol City at the end of the season.

In the 2019/20 season, City’s current tally would have put them in 10th place at the end of the campaign. Liverpool finished bottom of the table on six points, with Birmingham City one point above on seven.
Other seasons have seen a higher total required, with clubs needing 11 points last year. In both the 2022/23 and 2021/22 seasons, 12 points would have been needed.
The current highest total came in the 2020/21 campaign, where teams needed 13 points to avoid finishing bottom.
That gives an average points required of 10.3 over the six seasons.

With four games left to play, 11th-placed West Ham are already on 12 points, meaning the total needed could be the highest since the league’s establishment.
The good news for City is that they have a game in hand over the Hammers, with a very similar goal difference. It puts City’s fate in their own hands, with a win in that game putting them level on points with West Ham in the table.
The numbers show the rising quality of the WSL this season. City just have to make sure that they are keeping up with it.
