A 63-year-old man has been arrested following an incident in Richmond in which two Brentford players intervened to protect a victim of an alleged racially motivated assault.

Telegraph Sport revealed on Sunday that the two Brentford first-team players had rushed to the aid of a man after seeing the assault take place at around 2am.

Neither player suffered serious injuries but sources told Telegraph Sport they were left bloodied by the incident.

Metropolitan Police have confirmed that a 63-year-old man was arrested on Tuesday on suspicion of common assault, attempted criminal damage, and a racially aggravated public order offence. He has since been released on bail.

Further inquiries by the police have also identified an alleged second victim who had been subjected to racially aggravated verbal abuse.

Police were called to the incident in the early hours of Sunday morning, at around 2am. The Brentford players had just arrived in London following their goalless draw with Leeds United on Saturday evening.

As the match was the last before the international break, in which some Brentford players were going abroad to represent their countries, members of the squad were permitted to make their own travel arrangements from Elland Road.

The two players who intervened in the alleged assault were among those who had made their own travel plans to return to the capital following the draw.

Brentford are only three points behind fifth-placed Liverpool and two points behind sixth-placed Chelsea in the race for the Champions League places.

Qualification for Europe’s primary competition would be a major achievement by Keith Andrews and his players. Brentford were tipped by many at the start of the campaign to be relegated.

Their next match is against Everton at home on April 11.
