There is a common conception in the football echo chamber that players manage to find their feet after leaving Manchester United – but that isn’t always the case.

Scott McTominay, who left Old Trafford to sign for Napoli, is the latest example of someone thriving outside of the spotlight of the Red Devils.

The midfielder’s career had somewhat stagnated at the club he rose up the academy ranks at – and a move to Italy beckoned and he took his opportunity with both hands.

McTominay managed to hit new heights in the sun of Naples and reports even suggested that a sensational homecoming could have been on the cards.

Without the Scot, Kobbie Mainoo has flourished into a top Premier League midfielder and the club will do all they can to find him the perfect partner this summer.

McTominay, in the same breath, is living a terrific life out in Italy – but the same cannot be said for all players that have left Manchester United for pastures new.

Timothy Fosu-Mensah, as a prime example, is among those who has dwindled into obscurity.

Currently available on a free transfer after leaving Bayer Leverkusen, Fosu-Mensah joined United from Ajax in 2014 and rose through the academy ranks before making his senior debut.

Reliable on his day, the 1998-born defender made 30 appearances in total for the club’s first team but joined Leverkusen in 2021.

After a string of injury issues, he left Germany in 2024 and has been without a club since.

According to GIVEMESPORT sources, though, the Dutchman is now training with Crystal Palace Under-21s as a means of getting back up to full fitness.

Timothy Fosu-Mensah is aware of the surroundings at Selhurst Park given he spent the 2017/18 season there on loan, playing 24 matches in the process, and is said to be making good progress.

GIVEMESPORT have reported that, after following a programme that has been designed to rebuild match fitness and rhythm, he is now physically prepared to return to action.

Not a world-beater by any stretch of the imagination, the three-cap Netherlands international may not be short of would-be buyers when he is ready to return.

He has plenty of experience at the top level, having played 49 times in the Premier League, and could serve a team in England’s top flight reasonably well.

Clubs will be impressed with the fact that he’s working tirelessly to return to his former self rather than wait around for a potential suitor to approach him.
