West Ham fans are not happy about Nuno Espirito’s decision to start Freddie Potts against Aston Villa.

Nuno introduced the midfielder to the line-up after Jean-Clair Todibo suffered an injury in the pre-match warm-up.

Potts was then substituted at half-time as the former Nottingham Forest manager recognised his mistake.

Hammers supporters have now made their feelings abundantly clear on what Potts’ role in the team should be.

Be honest – is Freddie Potts good enough to start? 🤔

Hammers News ran a poll on TalkingPoints to gauge West Ham fans’ opinion of Freddie Potts after the Villa defeat.

77% of supporters voted that he is not good enough to be in the starting XI, even though Nuno clearly disagrees.

We also received several comments conveying the same message.

“If it’s not 100% no (not good enough), then the people saying yes don’t watch us play,” a fan explained.

“At best, he’s a mid-table championship player… I would cash him out and move on. He’s never going to be a starter for us if we end up staying up and improving next season.”

“No, he didn’t do anything of note,” one wrote, while another added: “No, I don’t think he is.”

Meanwhile, the same question was asked to West Ham supporters on the Hammers News Facebook page.

A very underwhelming Villa Park defeat! 🙄

Describe THAT performance in one word…

Jarrod Bowen of West Ham United runs with the ball under pressure from Ollie Watkins of Aston Villa during the Premier League match between Aston Villa and West Ham United at Villa Park on March 22, 2026 in Birmingham, England.

We received over 100 responses, with the majority agreeing that Potts is not ready to start games under Nuno.

“No, he’s nowhere near Prem quality,” a comment read. “He looked like a cat stuck in the headlights yesterday.”

“Just baffled why he started over Kante or Magassa, since both have played recently in decent performances. Don’t understand that call at all.”

“Championship player, like quite a few of them, to be fair,” posted another Hammers fan.

Hopefully, Nuno will share the same view as the supporters and play either Soungoutou Magassa or Mohamadou Kante next time instead.
