But his lively 45 minutes at home to Everton was just part of a day’s work.
March asked to play in the PL2 fixture having been unused substitute for the seniors against Liverpool the previous day.
He is working his way back to full match fitness after two lengthy injury-enforced absences.
Having gone on wide on the right with his side 1-0 up, he was heavily involved in two goals on the way to a 5-0 win.
The outing was timely as both senior and under-21 squads now go into an international break.
Under-21s head coach Shannon Ruth was delighted to have March on board for two big reasons.
Ruth told The Argus: “One, I thought he played extremely well.
“Two, you see a lot of professionalism. Even at the end, he could shoot but he gives the young boy a tap-in for a goal and it just shows the person that he is.
“I thought he looked really sharp. I thought he really impacted the game and showed moments of real quality, that we know he has got.
“Just delighted that he was able to get 45 minutes under his belt and impact the game and I’m sure that will give him some confidence going into when we come back from international break.”
March and Harry Howell, who is now with England under-18s, were keen to play.
Ruth said: “It shows that the level of professionals that we have here that they want to play, they want to be involved in games.
“For whatever reason, if they are not involved in the first-team game, the w ant to stay sharp and be in the best condition to perform when that moment comes.”
March did not watch the first half from the bench.
Instead, he was doing exercises on the adjoining pitch.
After the game, he was straight into the gym for more work.
Ruth said: “It is part of his journey back. He has got a set of routines and a set of exercises that he has to do to come back to full fitness as the Solly that we know.
“He’s a very professional individual. He knows his body really, really well.
“What you will see with a lot of the professionals here is that they have got their own individual plans that they all do to get themselves ready for the game.
“It’s on a very individual basis.
“Solly warmed up separately and then that got him ready to come on at half-time.”
