The proposal from Oaktree Education involves changing the building at 6 Northlands Road from its use as offices.
The site would create an additional facility to support the education provider’s main teaching operations.
A planning statement prepared on behalf of the applicant by Nova Planning said: “Oaktree Education is seeking to expand the teaching facilities available to them to help increase the number of students it can accommodate and improve the service it can provide.
“The intention of this proposal is to expand their current offering through the creation of a new, additional teaching site.
“The site at 6 Northlands Road in Southampton is an ideal option for Oaktree Education.
“The existing building has a suitable internal layout and requires only minor interior modernisation and decoration to facilitate the proposed use.”
Plans for the school, which would be for children aged 11 to 16, show seven classrooms spread across the ground and first floor of the building, alongside a staffroom, office space and medical room.
The statement said Oaktree Education is an education and social care provider which offers young people, primarily with special educational needs, the opportunity to access bespoke curriculums in a safe and secure way.
It added: “The aim for their students is to give both the academic and vocational skills to prepare them for adulthood, independence and employability.
“The bespoke curriculum offered by Oaktree Education can meet the students’ academic and emotional needs, highlight their strengths and support areas of development.
“This is coupled with a team of passionate and experienced professional.”
The application was approved by Southampton City Council planning officers.
A condition of the planning permission limited the number of pupils at any one time to a maximum of 20, with staff capped at 10.
This was to ensure scale of the use remains appropriate to the site and surrounding area.
