Charles, 22, bent an effort into the top corner from at least 35 yards out to double Southampton’s advantage at St Mary’s.

The Northern Ireland international also scored a corker last month to secure a historic 4-3 comeback victory over Leicester City in added time.

Asked on BBC Radio Solent if he has ever scored a goal like the one Charles managed against Oxford, Stephens quipped: “What do you think?

“He’s outstanding technically. It doesn’t surprise me with Shea. I think he’s an outstanding footballer. Everyone can see that.

“He can go and do whatever he wants in a game. I think he’s absolutely brilliant, and it was brilliant to watch it live.

“It was brilliant to be on the pitch when that happened, and I’m grateful that it was a goal to put us 2-0 up. It was a brilliant goal.”

Having stormed to an early two-goal lead, Saints restricted Oxford United to just one clear-cut opportunity, despite the visitors enjoying decent spells.

Spurs loanee Will Lankshear fired a one-on-one effort past the far post, having pinched the ball from Taylor Harwood-Bellis, in the second half.

Oxford’s inability to score meant Saints kept their fifth clean sheet in six home league games, something which delighted defender Stephens.

“It’s nice to be solid. We needed Daniel [Peretz] to make a few saves on Wednesday night. Fortunately, we didn’t need him too much today,” he added.

“It was a good, solid win going into the [international] break. We’ve been on a good run, so it’s nice to have a bit of a rest now.

“There is a lot of experience on the pitch, especially in that defensive part of the pitch. We’ve all played a lot of games at this level.

“We’ve also got lads who are really pushing us every day in training, which is fantastic. I spoke to the manager the other day about how important the squad has been.

“It’s worked so well over the past few months. That shows on the pitch, as do the celebrations when we win. It’s important to celebrate when we win because it’s very enjoyable.”
