Tottenham, West Ham United, Leeds and Nottingham Forest are involved in fight to the death with just three of the four going on to survive the Premier League relegation trap door shutting on them at the end of the season. There are seven games remaining for West Ham to overtake one of them.
Spurs’ season has just taken a distinct downward turn with the news that their first choice goal keeper needs an operation: Guglielmo Vicario will have to undergo surgery next week on a hernia.
With classic understatement, the Spuds’ official web site claims in a matter of fact tone that everything is going to plan:
“We can confirm that Guglielmo Vicario will undergo surgery next week on a hernia. The minor procedure for the Italy international goalkeeper has been timed to have as minimal an impact on our season as possible.”
You can bet your bottom dollar that there’s supporter panic behind the scenes: Their second choice keeper Antonin Kinsky was hooked after conceding three goals in fifteen minutes amidst a dreadful error strewn performance which saw him dropped from the first team.

Subbed and ignored by Tudor – Antonin Kinsky
And yet Tottenham have no choice but to recall the 23 year old for at least the next month: The Czechs’ confidence must have been shattered after being subbed and ignored by his manager in the dreadful first half performance against Athletico Madrid.
In a relegation battle with such fine margins, Spurs fans must be dreading the return of the Czech shot stopper. I almost feel sorry for him.
