Bournemouth head coach Andoni Iraola has insisted referee Stuart Attwell and VAR official Craig Pawson were right not to award a penalty to Amad shortly before Ryan Christie equalised against Manchester United. With the Reds leading 1-0 thanks to a Bruno Fernandes penalty, they felt they should have had another spot kick when Adrien Truffert pulled Amad to the ground.

Attwell took a long look at the challenge before waving away the complaints. In the next attack, Bournemouth equalised. United protested the decision but after reviewing the incident, Pawson advised Attwell to stick with his on-field decision and the goal was awarded.

Speaking to Match of the Day at full time, Iraola said: “Now we have the advantage we can see replays quickly and I didn’t think there was anything in that one [Amad]. I think the Evanilson one and the Matheus Cunha one are both penalties because defenders lose the position and then the Amad one is never a penalty.

“We asked for one in the first half – Harry Maguire with two hands behind his back but I don’t think that was enough for a penalty either. I don’t think there is much to discuss.”

United were disappointed with the decision not to award Amad a penalty, particularly as Maguire was sent off for a similar challenge on Evanilson that earned Bournemouth a penalty and a point. Explaining the decision not to give a penalty for the challenge on Amad, the Premier League Match Centre posted: “The referee’s call of no penalty for a challenge by Truffert was checked and confirmed by VAR – with it deemed the contact was not sufficient for a foul.”

In his post-match press conference, the Bournemouth boss reiterated: “I would add another incident, I think there are four incidents. The two penalties they’ve called are clear penalties, the defenders involved in both situations lose their position and have to commit a foul.

“The Amad penalty I don’t think is a penalty, there is no contact and he goes to the floor very light. We complained also about the first half, two hands behind the back, Maguire on Evanilson, but I don’t think it’s enough in the same way to call a penalty.

“I think the decisions in the four cases are correct. I’ve had time to review them and I think the big decision, they have got it right.” Reflecting on the result, Iraola told BBC Sport: “A draw against United is a good result.

“But 15 draws, some of those we deserved more. We wanted three points and we played well enough but they looked dangerous every time they came forward.

“We played really well and at the end, probably because we finished against 10 men, we were the closest team to winning it. It’s a challenging game against United.”
