Leeds United host Brentford at Elland Road on Saturday night. But, the travelling fans are once again being let down by the broadcasters.
I’d imagine you’re already well aware. Match-going fans are no longer a priority when it comes to the scheduling of football matches.
The Premier League’s demand for global reach and the best revenue possible means that fans’ needs are pushed to the side.
Sky Sports schedule Leeds United v Brentford on Saturday 8pm slot
Up next at Elland Road is a test against Europe-chasing Brentford under Keith Andrews. The Bees are looking to bounce back from a 2-2 draw at home to Wolves, where they chucked away a two-goal lead against the side sitting bottom of the league.
It was confirmed previously that this game would be scheduled for the Saturday night slot at 8pm. That decision came down to the wire due to Champions League knockout ties for English clubs.
For Leeds, it’s a potential psychological advantage. The ‘under the lights’ trope has been a key force behind Leeds’ upturn in form since the start of December.
Granted we’ve lost our last two home games under the floodlights, against Manchester City and Sunderland. However, there’s something about Elland Road at night that gets more out of this team.
Sky Sports decision leaves Brentford fans restricted on travel plans for Leeds United
Making the long trip up from West London to West Yorkshire, it looks a fairly poor decision from the Premier League and broadcasters to shove Brentford on such a late kick-off for an away game.
The Bees’ match information article on the club website makes Sky Sports’ decision look even worse for the away fans.
“Unfortunately, there are no direct or indirect train services that will return you to London after the game. Services resume every 30 minutes from 8.10am the next day if you choose to stay the night,” the away day guide reads.
Any away fans will have to wait until the next day if they’re travelling by train.
It goes to show that fans actually in the ground mean very little to those in charge of scheduling the fixtures each month.
