Sandro Tonali

Italy and Newcastle United can breathe easy. After 24 hours of tension, Sandro Tonali has been cleared to take part in the upcoming World Cup playoff campaign. That’s a huge relief for Gennaro Gattuso and the Italy staff in particular.

Tonali was forced off during Newcastle’s Champions League clash with Barcelona on Wednesday evening, sparking immediate concern within the national team camp.

The Italian midfielder started the game alongside Jacob Ramsey and Joelinton but was taken off after 55 minutes following an awkward fall on the touchline. Reports then stated he would undergo an MRI scan today on the problem.

Tests bring good news

According to Gianluca di Marzio, Thursday’s medical tests delivered the outcome Italy hoped for. He has only suffered a minor edema; there is no structural damage.

That means there is no risk of him missing the World Cup play-off semi-final vs Northern Ireland. The Newcastle midfielder should also be fully fit for the potential playoff final.

Di Marzio reports that the midfielder’s condition is ‘nothing serious’, ending fears of a last-minute midfield crisis.

Newcastle manager Eddie Howe had initially labelled Tonali as “doubtful” for Sunday’s derby against Sunderland. The plan is to assess him day by day, with Italy hoping he is rested ahead of international duty.

Gravina: ‘There’s Reason for Optimism’

Gabriele Gravina, president of the Italian Football Federation, also commented on Tonali’s injury after speaking to the midfielder himself.

“I spoke to him via phone with the coach and our doctor,” he said.

“He was more relaxed than when he left the pitch. There is some concern, but it’s moderate. Today’s tests have provided reassurance. He needs to recover, and we’ll do so with all the means at our disposal. There’s reason for optimism.”

That optimism has now been confirmed. Medical tests today have revealed no significant damage, leaving him available for the international break.
