Sky Sports’ latest TV picks means new dates for two Middlesbrough games

General view Of Portman Road

As expected, Middlesbrough’s trip to Ipswich Town next month has been selected by Sky Sports for live coverage – and the move has implications on a second Boro fixture.

Boro were initially scheduled to take on Ipswich at Portman Road on Saturday, April 18. But with the game set to be a huge clash in the race for automatic promotion in the Championship, it was inevitably going to be moved for TV.

And Sky have found a new slot for the game. It will now be played on Sunday, April 19, with kick-off at 12pm so as not to clash with the broadcaster’s Premier League offerings later in the day.

That has implications on the following game for Kim Hellberg’s side, which was due to take play on Tuesday, April 21 as they host already-relegated Sheffield Wednesday. Due to the Ipswich game now being Sunday, however, the clash with the Owls will now take place on the Wednesday evening – April 22 – instead.

The latest pick carries on Boro’s rather remarkable record with away games since Christmas. The pre-Christmas trip to Bristol City was the last league game on the road that Boro played in the traditional Saturday 3pm kick-off. Ipswich was the last away game that could have still been a Saturday 3pm game, but it was never expected to be.

Boro will play a Saturday 3pm game the week before travelling to Suffolk. They host Portsmouth at the Riverside on April 11 and Sky Sports decided against televising that game when they made their picks last week.

That now only leaves Boro’s penultimate game of the season, against Watford at the Riverside on April 25, to potentially get a new date and/or time. Sky will announce their picks for that weekend’s round of games next week.

The final game of the season, away at Wrexham on Saturday May 2, was already announced as a 12.30pm kick-off. All Championship games kick-off at the same time on the final day, and all of the games are available to watch on Sky Sports+.
