Brentford

Brentford are among a number of British clubs now tracking São Paulo midfielder Damián Bobadilla, who is putting together an increasingly convincing season in Brazil.

Celtic and Brighton came first, with Brentford now joining the chase.

Interest from Martin O’Neill’s side was reported earlier this month, with the Celtic claims coming from Paraguay, where he player is from. Brighton were pulled into the picture at around the same time.

The 24-year-old has become a regular starter for São Paulo in 2026. He’s been building momentum with consistent performances in midfield.

He has already made 11 appearances, contributing two goals and one assist. One of those goals came in a key win over Red Bull Bragantino, helping secure a place in the state championship semi-finals.

His growing importance at club level has been matched internationally. Bobadilla is part of the Paraguay national team setup and is expected to feature at the 2026 World Cup. That tournament could significantly increase his value, especially if he plays a prominent role.

As a result, interest from Europe has started to gather pace.

Why Damián Bobadilla stands out for Brentford

Damián Bobadilla has developed into a modern box-to-box midfielder since arriving at São Paulo. He operates mainly as a second midfielder but can step forward into more advanced roles when required.

His game is built on intensity and balance. Defensively, he averages around two tackles per match, alongside regular interceptions and a high volume of ball recoveries. That reflects both his reading of the game and his willingness to engage physically.

In possession, he offers reliability. His passing accuracy typically sits between 80% and 85%, and he is comfortable progressing play through short and medium distribution. He is not a pure playmaker, but he keeps the tempo moving and supports transitions effectively.

At the same time, he brings forward thrust. Bobadilla regularly makes late runs into the box and contributes with goals, while also showing the stamina to cover large areas of the pitch.

That combination – defensive output, distribution and attacking presence – is what defines his box-to-box profile.

As we have covered, Brighton have been following the midfielder as part of their longer-term planning, with reports suggesting he could be considered if there are changes in their midfield options.

Celtic have also been monitoring him for months as they look to add a similar profile, potentially linked to expected departures in the summer window.

Brentford now enter the picture

Brentford have now joined that group of interested clubs, with Celtic and Brighton, as per Brazilian outlet Radar da Bola, with the Premier League side also tracking Bobadilla ahead of the next transfer window.

The midfielder’s recent performances have not gone unnoticed, and there is an expectation that further enquiries could arrive in the coming weeks as clubs continue their assessments.

For Brentford, the profile fits. The club have built a reputation for identifying players in strong form outside Europe’s biggest leagues and moving early in the market.

Contract situation and next steps

Damián Bobadilla joined São Paulo from Cerro Porteño in 2024 for around €1.8m (£1.5m). The Brazilian side secured 60% of his economic rights.

That could become a key factor in any future negotiations, since São Paulo would only receive just over half of a transfer fee.

His contract runs until December 2027, placing the Brazilian club in a stable position. There is no immediate pressure to sell, but there is also an understanding that strong offers could be considered.

With interest now coming from multiple clubs in England and Scotland, Bobadilla is moving firmly onto the European radar.

For Brentford, as with Brighton and Celtic, this remains a monitoring situation for now. However, with the World Cup approaching and his profile rising, that could change quickly.
