Sunderland’s tough run of form continued against Brighton
Chris Rigg
Teenager Chris Rigg has vowed the Sunderland squad will bounce back from the Premier League defeat against Brighton & Hove Albion.
Yankuba Minteh’s second half goal was enough to condemn Sunderland to a 1-0 loss at the Stadium of Light.
Rigg, who has hardly featured in the Premier League this season, was part of a valiant Black Cats side that pushed to get a result from the game. Rigg found the net in the second half but VAR intervened and ruled the goal out for an earlier offside.
“It was a good game of football,” Rigg said. “We had spells in the first half where we probably should have put one away. Early in the second half, I scored in the second half but it got disallowed. Things happen.
“Overall, it’s frustrating, but we will bounce back soon.
“It’s about form. Coming off the back of the defeat at Port Vale which hurt us deep down, we tried to bounce back today. Unfortunately it didn’t work but it’s a big game next week so hopefully we can do it then.”
Attentions swiftly turn to a huge Premier League tie next Sunday when Le Bris’s side heads to St James’ Park to face Newcastle United in the Tyne-Wear derby.
Sunderland are in the midst of something of an injury crisis but Rigg believes they will be able to rise to the challenge on Tyneside having already beaten the Mags this season in the reverse fixture.
“It’s a perfect opportunity to give the fans some joy,” added Rigg. “We’ll try our best to do that.”
