Downes, 27, was named man of the match, made six recoveries and played a key role in perhaps the two most important goals Saints have scored all season.
This victory against a Coventry side running away with the division has kept Saints firmly in play-off contention.
Downes opened the scoring against the league leaders, reacting quickest to tap in after Cyle Larin’s effort was pushed onto the post.
His role in the second goal was not as obvious if you only had eyes for the ball. He did not flick the ball on or deliver the initial cross.

Instead, he stood his ground and battled with Milan van Ewijk, allowing Kuryu Matsuki enough space to prod James Bree’s corner across the line.
Game set and match, and gone is the player who struggled for consistency at the start of the season. Downes is back to his match-winning best.
“He has been outstanding. He’s played his 100th game for the club today, so a big compliment to him for that achievement,” said Eckert.
“He’s absolutely peak at the moment. Every player has had some tough moments in their career for different reasons, but he’s so important for us.

“I think he’s grown more and more as a character, also in terms of leadership within the group. I think today he was spot on.”
He added: “There aren’t many players on the pitch that can cover ground as quickly as he does. He does that normally when we don’t have the ball.
“That’s something that we try to bring into his game more, that he has the courage also to go up the pitch. Normally, he’s the deeper midfielder.
“We had a conversation, and I asked him then if he had ever played as an eight, and he hasn’t really, but I think he’s done that excellently today.”
This performance was not a deviation from the recent trend for Downes. His consistent health has led to consistent performances on the pitch.
Over the past two years, Downes has dealt with persistent stomach issues capable of flaring up at any moment. Thankfully, no such occurrence has happened this year.
That has allowed him to start all but one league game in 2026. Consistency of minutes breeds rhythm on the pitch, which in turn leads to better performances.
This was not the case at the start of the season. Many expected him to dominate the division, but he was rotated for most of the campaign up until December.
“I want to put the start of the season right, really. We didn’t do ourselves justice at all, so we’re all trying to put it right,” Downes told the Daily Echo.

“Early on in the season, it was just tough. We were just in a bad spot, I think. Some of us were hungover from last year.
“I know you can’t say that, but it is true. It was a difficult year, and it took a little while to get back. I think you can see now that we’re a team altogether.”
Leo Scienza remains favourite to win the fan awards, but if Downes continues this form, the midfielder could yet reclaim the honour he won in 2023/24.
