West Ham were determined to sign goalkeeper Antonin Kinsky on loan from Tottenham in the January transfer window.
The move looked likely at one stage before Spurs changed their minds and decided to keep him.
Kinsky then remained second choice, behind Guglielmo Vicario, until interim manager Igor Tudor selected him against Atletico Madrid.
This turned out to be an awful decision as he was substituted after making two calamitous mistakes in 16 minutes.
Hammers boss and former goalkeeper Nuno Espirito Santo has now reacted to Kinsky’s shocking Champions League performance.
How do you feel about Mads Hermansen NOW?
Has he won you over? Or are there still doubts?
Nuno Espirito Santo feels sorry for Antonin Kinsky
It is not often that West Ham managers speak about Tottenham’s performances, but Nuno did in his latest press conference.
It appears the goalkeeper union is real, as Nuno sincerely discussed the Spurs man’s downfall in the Champions League.
“Of course [I have sympathy]. It’s tough for him. It’s tough coming out of the game so early,” Nuno said.
“It’s a tough situation, but this is football. How you come out of these moments is what defines you. Hopefully, he can bounce back.”
Nuno was not pressed for a comment on West Ham’s interest in signing Kinsky over the winter, which might have been interesting.
He probably would not have admitted it, but Nuno must be relieved that the 22-year-old did not join the Hammers.
Although one game will not define his career, Kinsky’s catalogue of errors on Tuesday suggests that he is not yet an elite goalkeeper.
