At the end of Howard Webb’s toughest weekend since taking up his new role as chief refereeing officer in the Premier League, former official Dermot Gallagher gives his verdict on the big decisions.
INCIDENT: VAR check cleared Marcus Rashford from being offside in the build-up to Bruno Fernandes’ equaliser (78) – to the fury of City’s players, who protested that the forward had interfered with play.
What is the offside rule in this case?
A player in an offside position at the moment the ball is played or touched by a team-mate is only penalised on becoming involved in active play by:
. interfering with play by playing or touching a ball passed or touched by a team-mate or
. interfering with an opponent by:
. preventing an opponent from playing or being able to play the ball by clearly obstructing the opponent’s line of vision or
. challenging an opponent for the ball or
. clearly attempting to play a ball which is close when this action impacts on an opponent or
. making an obvious action which clearly impacts on the ability of an opponent to play the ball
DERMOT’S VERDICT: Wrong decision, offside.

yes offside, but at the end of the day no one is above the refs decision at the end of the day, but every goal is checked by VAR so why isnt he called to the screen for rashford interfering with play?
i get it tho
It was Manchester United. They get penalty kicks awarded after the full-time whistle goes. This is minor in my opinion.
VAR has to improve much more and I personally believe more power should be given to VAR. Ground refs have limitations.. In such important matches we dont need subjective decisions anymore.. What you guys think?
The referee's view is nothing here. There is VAR, what is its use if it doesn't influence the match official to make correct decisions?
Without Rashford there, Akanji would definitely get to the ball, but I see what EPL are doing, Arsenal for the trophy
The FA should be clear if EPL is WWE max or not
If Akanji brings him down and he isn't offside, it's a straight red for Akanji. Rashford was interfering with the play.
Kanji is slow and can't get to the ball
As a player u don't check your run until the whistle is blown
I think it was an intelligent play by Rashford NO OFFSIDE
You have all the tech in this world ..and you can't call that an offside. Idk how that can't be offside
Don't matter, it did and we won
if that's the case then the Bruno's goal at the world cup should have been granted to Ronaldo as his presence (if not a touch) made that goal possible, what do you think☺
the scum always get help from the refs, ALWAYS
This is offside all day and any night. Not a city or MU fan but that was a clear offside. 👍
Even those that brought offside to football still can't decide in this game, rashford was interesting when he was chasing the ball and standing as an obstacle to city's defender
It was unfair decision made by the referee but it's an automatic offside
we this English fan thinking we have the poorest referee governing our sport indeed affecting the game. their mistakes are too much even a kinder-garden student will give an offside, am no more understand football
I’m a united fan and this was offside. Rashfords run intentionally shields the ball.
It’s a goal city supporter just mad cause they lost
These things happen, get used….City won the league last year when it was in their favour against Everton at home….
Akanji isn’t getting to the ball IMO. I agree that Rashford is impacting the play though.
It's a daylight thiefs 😂
It will be hard to sanitize this one . As hard as anyone may try to justify that decisionp. And the more they try the more fishy it looks. Jus say sorry ..it sounds better
SHUT UP ITS A CLEAR OFFSIDE!
Yes of course the goal should stand, because a "subjective offside" is a moronic dribble, invented be thougt-readers. Embarrassing to see this guy making a fool of himself
LOL that's not what he said immediately after the game.
If Rashford was not there probably Kanji wouldn't have run for the ball the way he did, and the other day we saw Garnacho run past a defender from a position that looked not possible and scored so Kanji's position doesn't guarantee that he would have got the ball as there is a possibility of him and the keeper confusing each other on who is to get the ball and definitely Bruno can end up getting closer to the ball and score as he did coz he had already visioned himself hitting the ball as we can see him doing it even when everyone thought Rashy was the one going for the ball.
Why don't they just change the rules ?
Unless a player is actually blocking an opposition player, let him be in an offside position unless he touches the ball.
Same for handball, if a player accidentally handles the ball, within a certain distance of the shot, then don't give handball.
That referee need to go back to school n ban for refereeing🤦🏻♂️🤦🏻♂️
SO NOW REFERRING IS ABT HOW THEY FEEL. YALL JUST TRYNNA KEEP MAN CITY FROM WINNING 3 IN A ROW. THEY'LL DEFINITELY WIN THIS LEAGUE.
THERES NOTHING WRNG WITH SAYING THE REFEREE GOT IT WRONG INTENTIONALLY BCOZ HE HAD THE CHANCE TO GO TO VAR
As for me l think Rashford was offside its only that the Ref and Lines Man failed to react as quick as possible and at that point when the ball was behind the net it was now hard for a proper decision due to the type of the game. That was a tense match and the Ref, Var and Lines Man must be quick in decision making in Games. Offside is not just given when a player touches the ball but in all cases when a have any impact towards the ball. That was a clear offside.
If city loose the title my a point we may come back to this
What's the point of Ref Watch if you already had your points and can't stop putting it in the guess's mouth. Yes, I'm United fan but if you are the host, be professional and read your god ** questions in your paper.
Idk why he doesn't get it. It's explained so well why it didn't go to VAR. Still, should've been offside imo. I think it's weird how fans keep defending these goals, because it's their team that scored it.xd
New Strategy by Managers to Players. Offside player interfere with play, on side player score. I would love to see the outcome of this if a goal like this happens again with 2 Different Teams.
By and large : Every Man U "fan" / player/ manager will say YES . By and. large every …..You've guessed it…will say NO …. Not quite 100 % , but nearly …. "Fans" are not known for their impartiality .
Funny things allways happening at Old Trafford.Remember Martinelli shoulder on Eriksen. Then Var came out after months and told it was not a free kick 🤔
As a Man United fan, this was the correct call… all these other “United fans” 🤦🏻♂️
Now I believe in match fixing
I think next time if it happens. Just foul the one on offside position. Jump and kick him.
Deal
The game was simple when the rule asked, “when the ball was played, was the player in an offside position?”
Since VAR: we’ll bring in multi color lines, adjust the camera angle, check to see if he actually touched the ball, watch the replay over-and-over, slow it down to support the decision you want to make, neglect VAR altogether, confuse the players, confuse the fans, confuse the officials, ignore the actual linesman, talk about subjective offside, and do this in no particular order until no one knows what the offside rule is.
