Brentford’s ability to consistently unearth hidden gems for modest fees before selling them on for staggering profits has become one of English football’s most admired recruitment models.

The credit goes to owner Matthew Benham, who took full control of his boyhood club in 2012 and has overseen its transformation from a stagnating third-tier side into an ambitious top-flight outfit.

Having made his millions by revolutionsing sports gambling by applying Oxford-educated physics to predictive modelling, Benham has applied this strategy to Brentford, his success underpinned by an analytical, data-driven ‘Moneyball’ approach.

It means undervalued talent including Ollie Watkins, Ivan Toney, David Raya, Yoane Wissa and Bryan Mbeumo were signed for roughly £24m combined and moved on for around £230m.

With such an extensive scouting network and meticulous attention to detail, it begs the question: which transfer targets have Brentford previously identified, but never got over the line?

Speaking at the MIT Sloan Sports Analytics Conference in Boston, Benham lifted the lid on some notable players the Bees scouted early but ultimately didn’t sign due to various stumbling blocks.

This includes Eberichi Eze, Michael Olise, Omar Marmoush and Mykhailo Mudryk, who later cost other teams over £266m in total. “There’s always going to be ones you regret,” Benham admitted.

Crystal Palace snapped up Olise, who went on to thrive in the Premier League before a £50m to German giants Bayern Munich, where the French international is tearing up the Bundesliga.

“His scouting was unbelievable – out of this world,” Benham said of the winger. “But we just got promoted and we weren’t used to the crazy agent fees in the Premier League at the time.

“The deal collapsed because the agent fee for that one was so insanely high that we stepped away… There’s always going to be ones you miss out on.”

Brentford also identified Eze while he was at west London rivals QPR. Palace also got there first, and the Englishman scored the winning goal in last year’s FA Cup final before a £67m move to Arsenal.

“I was saying before that we could have signed Eze for £4m I think in 2019,” Benham revealed.

The 57-year-old added: “We could also have signed Marmoush on a free about three years ago. [We could have signed Eze and Marmoush] for about £4m combined. The summer we got promoted to the Premier League (in 2021), there was actually two players that scouted amazingly, amazingly well.”

Manchester City acquired Egypt forward Marmoush for £59m in January 2025.

Brentford also tried to sign Mudryk from Shakhtar Donetsk in 2022, with bids around £12–15m rejected. Benham said they were “quite close to signing him for a low fee, for about €20m.” Mudryk later joined Chelsea F.C. for around €80m, but is currently serving a drug ban and hasn’t played since November 2024.

Brentford shifted their approach somewhat last summer when they brought in Dango Ouattara from Bournemouth for a club record £42.5m fee. With more money in the bank than ever before and the club chasing European qualification, it will be fascinating to see if the Bees blend their existing model with the additions of more established and expensive names.
