At the World Cup in Doha, the Dutch national team was captained by the Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk, while much of their tactical acumen comes from assistant manager Edgar Davids.
Van Dijk and Davids, along with many others at the World Cup may have represented a different nation altogether – Suriname.
This is the story of how the tiny nation of Suriname produces so many world-class players. Told by Adam Crafton, illustrated by Craig Silcock.

Put Mr. Ruud Gullit in the central defense position is completely unaware of the place he represented in world football. It would be understandable to exchange with Mr. Frank Rijkaard. As always excellently video
Wow I had know idea of this migration pattern. I thought that this video was going to be about how the Dutch are a tiny nation that produce immense talent… little did I know. Thanks again for another incredible video!
And a racing driver
Suriname is part of south america. Join CONMEBOL and you'll progress much quicker.
The legacy of colonialism still felt to this day
Same with a Martinique for france
Not quite Uruguay
I sincerely hope they qualify. Good luck to all of you in Suriname. Love from The Netherlands ❤️
Much like how many north african players were trained in France, I would guess that this has a lot to do with training in the netherlands.
Croatia?
Finally some dutch recognition
They are all handsome too.
Colonialism is bad 😅.
👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾🇳🇱🇸🇷
Wow! So cool to see my country that is not much recognized on such a network like Tifo⚽️❤️. This video was fun to watch. Thanks tifo
And they produced arguably one of the scummiest racing drivers ever. A guy that makes Schumacher look like a saint
So happy y'all are presenting this type of content. That said, please be mindful during the editing process to represent the correct continent that a country is part of. I.E., Africa, not South America. Otherwise, a great story.
The Netherlands' contribution to modern football on and off the pitch is enormous, seems insane that they've never won a World Cup.
Our country has so much footballing potential, but I’m afraid it will never come to fruition due to all the corruption in the government and the higher ups in the SVB(our FA)
Suriname does not produce good players. The netherlands does
Genuinely thought this was going to be a video on the tiny nation of the Netherlands 😂
I didn't realize Suriname was part of CONCACAF. It makes me curious how that was decided as opposed to having them be in CONMEBOL.
How was it ever legal under international law for a country to prevent its migrant population from playing for their country of origin? This is a good video, but the continuing unfair effect of colonialism, even after independence, ought to get a mention.
The legacy of colonialism
awesome subject. something you dont think about.
Uruguay has only a population of 3m and produces a lot of talent. This nation has won 15 Copa Americas and World Cups too.
🇸🇷🇸🇷🇸🇷
Surinamese captian Shaq Pinas, Hammarby IF – åh Hammarby 💚🤍
"If the world was different" aka if not for colonialism
When Henry says that baby Clarence slept in between his legs it I think he meant that he shared a bed with the baby and probably other children
0:28 Denzel Dumfries is from Aruba, not Suriname
Yeah thats cool and all but suriname produces nothing. Academy and funding is here in the Netherlands. They are Dutch players, not from Suriname.
Let me summarize: IMMIGRATION.
If a country is anti-immigration, then these players would not exist.
Mbappe wouldn’t exist.
Dumfries is Aruban Dutch not Suriname Dutch. Both ex colonies, but not the same thing.
Imagine getting upset about beans.
Once the league is set up I would love a 5 minute section on each weekly podcast about the Suriname league and how it’s going. They could become everyone’s 2nd team.
I thought this was gonna be a Uruguay reupload
Ahem, Belgium?
6:26 Really interested in how the choice came about to use such an old map of the Netherlands, kinda weird
Genetics.
Suriname produces amazing footballers because they learn how to play in the Netherlands.
Also add the fact that Suriname had to play against Canada in the First Round of qualifying for WC2022 (The top team in CONCACAF qualifying). Two other group winners had the same amount of points as Suriname, that speaks for itself how the groups were made.
The legacy of imperialism and colonialism and its impact on football is fascinating.
