Born in London, Vera Walker, a care home resident in Southampton, has lived through more than a century of change, including the reign of King George V and the premiership of Stanley Baldwin.

Ms Walker said: “Don’t work so hard. Enjoy life more and have a sip of sherry every day,” as she celebrated her birthday at Templeton Place Care Home on Nursling Road, surrounded by friends and family.

She said: “It’s remarkable that so many people have come to say happy birthday.”

She spent many years running a convenience store with her late husband Fred, who she met in Essex before the couple settled in Southampton.

The pair were married for 58 years.

Kiya McFarlane, wellbeing coach at Templeton Place, said: “It’s a joy to celebrate such a special milestone with Vera and her family. Vera is a much-loved resident who brings warmth and humour to our home.”
