Jack Hinshelwood has signed a new contract with Brighton & Hove Albion until June 2029.
The England under-21 international’s previous deal, agreed in 2024, was due to expire in June 2028.
Hinshelwood has made 70 first-team appearances, scoring nine goals and contributing six assists in a variety of midfield roles and occasionally as a full-back, since progressing through the academy from the age of eight.
Head coach Fabian Hurzeler has converted the 20-year-old into an effective No 10 in the last three matches which produced a 2-1 wins at Brentford and at home to Nottingham Forest, followed by Wednesday’s 1-0 defeat by Premier League leaders Arsenal at the Amex Stadium.
“He has a very bright future ahead of him, and continues to grow and develop all the time,” Hurzeler said in a club statement. “Jack is the ideal role model for our academy players and is a fantastic reflection of the hard work the academy staff have put in with him over his time here.
“After making his breakthrough at such a young age, he was already fully integrated into the first team when I arrived and he is growing into a leader in the dressing room. We are delighted he has signed this new longer contract with the club.”
Hinshelwood is the fourth generation of his family to play professionally. His father, Adam, made 100 league appearances as a defender for Brighton from 2002-09. His late great-grandfather Wally played for Fulham, Chelsea, Reading and Bristol City. Wally’s sons Martin and Paul played for Brighton’s rivals Crystal Palace. Martin went on to coach and manage Brighton and is now an academy scout at the club.
Martin’s son, Danny, played for Brighton and Portsmouth. Jack has also made some of his first-team appearances since last season with his 17-year-old cousin Harry Howell.
Brighton have slipped back to 14th in the table with three wins in the last 16 league games following Palace’s 3-1 victory at Tottenham Hotspur on Thursday. Hurzeler’s side return to action at 11th-placed Sunderland on March 14.
