On Thursday, SportWitness covered claims from Tuttomercatoweb about interest from Newcastle United and Aston Villa in Como’s Jacobo Ramon.
The two Premier League sides are said to be monitoring the young defender, who is arguably one of the best in his position in Serie A.
He joined from Real Madrid in the summer and didn’t take too long to adapt to the Italian game. Under Cesc Fabregas, he has impressed with his ball-playing ability and recovery pace.
Interest from Newcastle United and Aston Villa caught attention and Fabregas has subsequently been asked about Ramon’s future. He appeared firm in his stance, conveying a positive opinion about the Spaniard.
Newcastle and Aston Villa may have no chance
The questioning happened during Como’s pre-game press conference ahead of the clash against Cagliari. Fabregas clarified that Ramon isn’t going anywhere and will stay at the club beyond this season.
The ex-Arsenal player said interest doesn’t surprise him – via Tuttomercatoweb: “That [interest] doesn’t surprise me. He was perfect for our game. The only doubt we had was whether he could compete in Italian football, how he’d adapt to a game like his, one that’s so competitive. He’s raised his level a lot, but with the ball, he doesn’t surprise me.”
Fabregas also appeared surprised at Ramon’s growth and offered insight into his future.
“I knew he was that type of player, but there are some players who surprise you a bit in one context or another. But it’s different; there are some players who are made of different stuff. Will he stay next year? Yes.”
The same report further praises the ex-Los Blancos talent but also warns about Real Madrid’s inclusion in the race. This is because they have a buyback clause in Ramon’s contract and this is likely to trouble multiple suitors.
Analysis: Player hype above real transfer
Considering the 21-year-old’s qualities, he will be a good signing for any club – and that includes Newcastle United or Aston Villa.
But knowing Como, they would ideally keep hold of him for longer. They have done that for Nico Paz and Assane Diao and should also do it for Martin Baturina. Unlike other Serie A sides, they’re not short of finances and this helps them take strong stances in the market.
Besides, mentioning English clubs is also a classic way of establishing their players’ market value. They have done it for all the aforementioned players. It seems like they’re at it again with Ramon.
