But it was lacking just the magical moment in the final quarter of the pitch as the leaders grabbed a 1-0 win.

Bart Verbruggen 6/10

Despite the slight deflection, it felt like he should have prevented the Saka goal. Inevitably, that affects his mark on what was otherwise a decent night.

Mats Wieffer 7/10

A better night defensively and got into some really good attacking positions, one of might have brought a penalty and another which should have seen him do better with a header.

Jan Paul van Hecke 7.5/10

Normal service. Good solid defending and looked to use the ball constructively.

Olivier Boscagli 8/10

Seized his chance in some style on a night where experience was valuable. Is an intense competitor and came up with some strong defensive work and decent use of possession.

Ferdi Kadioglu 7/10

Might have done more to prevent the goal but made an important intervention in the second half and generally buzzed around while keeping Saka quiet.

Carlos Baleba 6.5/10

A central character early on with his unsuccessful chip and unwitting deflection. Was not dominant but produced some good moments.

Pascal Gross 7/10

Kept the ball moving and played his midfield part in a compact team display.

Diego Gomez 7/10

Another strong and lively interpretation of his right-sided role. And another facet of his game as a towering header set up Rutter.

Jack Hinshelwood 6/10

His role means a lot of good work off the ball which is hard to appreciate from the stand but he did not catch the eye in possession.

Kaoru Mitoma 7/10

Looked a threat and his ankle injury has come at a time when he was livelier with every game. Fingers crossed.

Georginio Rutter 7/10

A performance which was easy to under-value because he did unglamorous work with defenders clinging to him. But there were moments when it was clear he is not a natural No.9

Subs – Yankuba Minteh 7/10

More about threat than end product but he certainly had some impact and looked fired up to prove a point after going on at half-time.

Danny Welbeck 6/10

The time was right for his entrance but it never really looked like paying off.
