Newcastle United have announced their initial allocation for their dream trip to the Spotify Nou Camp later this month – but there is hope that more fans can get seats for the battle with Barcelona.
The Magpies tackle La Liga giants Barcelona in Catalonia in the second leg of their last 16 Champions League encounter on March 18. And while there is still hope that Barca may be able to increase their capacity before the decisive tie gets played, the first batch of tickets has been recieved.
Newcastle have received 2,215 tickets with seat selection open to members tomorrow. The first window opens at 12pm for those with over 160 points and the second window starts at 2pm for those with more than 109 points.
United stated to fans: “This is an initial allocation, with the hope to increase it should Barcelona be granted additional capacity.”
Seat selection then shuts on Saturday but Barca chiefs are holding out for the prospect of being able to give Newcastle more tickets. Barca told Chronicle Live that they were awaiting for the green light to increase that amount but are in the hands of Barcelona City Council.
So far 10,000 fans have applied to Newcastle to get their hands tickets for the ultimate away trip. The hope is that Barca can open a further section of seats to take the allocation up to 3,100 – as confirmed by NUSC.
The Nou Camp currently down to a capacity of just 45,000 amid its development to a 102,000 capacity arena. Barca are awaiting the green light from Barcelona City Council to increase the capacity to 62,000.
The five-times European Cup winners confirmed to Chronicle Live last night that it had still not been decided how many more tickets could be available to Newcastle with the opening of new stands still pending.. A Barca spokesman also told us: “The visiting team will have, following UEFA regulation, the 5% of the capacity, and so this amount of tickets is not official yet.”
Barca president Joan Laporta has been pushing for the capacity increase in recent weeks and feels it should have been done already before Newcastle’s visit.
Laporta said last month: “I’m disappointed because we should already have the license. However, we’ll have it soon. It’s going well and at a very high pace.
“We have the City Council and the mayor committed. There are milestones we want to achieve that require the pace of construction to be as fast as possible: not only the stadium, but also the surrounding area.”
Tickets for the dream away day in Barca went on sale on Monday, with the window for tickets closing this afternoon at 3pm. Speaking on the prospect of playing Barcelona earlier in the season, ahead of the first clash, Howe had said: “It’s a historic fixture. As soon as we realised we were drawn against Barcelona, it had a magical feel to it.”
