Sandro Tonali has been linked with a move to Arsenal, Manchester United, and even a potential return to Italy in recent weeks.
The Newcastle United midfielder, however, publicly pointed toward a future on Tyneside after the win over Man Utd on Wednesday.
The 25-year-old, under contract until 2029 with an option to extend his deal a further year, has expressed his desire to take on greater responsibility within the squad next season, as if he didn’t have enough!
When asked about stepping into a larger leadership role, one assumes carrying the co-captain designation as previously held by Jamaal Lascelles, Tonali made his position clear.
“Yeah, of course. We are a bit different because Jamaal was a great leader; he spoke every week, every game to our team, to every player,” Tonali said. “He was great with everybody, and alone in the private meetings and really was a bit different to me.”
Tonali acknowledged the challenge that’d pose, but indicated his willingness to grow into a bigger role within the Magpie organization as soon as next season.
“It would be a little bit tough because it’s not my first language, but I will try,” Tonali said. “I try to do my best. I try to help every player in the pitch. And I think this should be for every player, not just for me.”
Tonali also reflected on the support he received during his first season following a nine-month suspension, which can be compared to that received by Bruno after his arrival from the Ligue 1 years ago.
“I think we have six or seven players in the leadership group—they all really helped me, especially the first year, three years ago, for me it was very difficult,” Tonali said. “Especially, Jacob Murphy, Callum Wilson, Jamaal, Bruno and Joelinton as well. Every day, they helped me a lot in that first season.”
Meanwhile, speculation about a Serie A return has been downplayed by the latest reports covering rumors about a possible Tonali exit.
“Sandro Tonali will NOT be returning to Italy, despite continued speculation,” the Daily Mail’s Craig Hope said. “Tonali does not see Serie A as the stage that will serve his career best in the coming years.”
For now, Tonali’s comments suggest planning for 2026/27 at St James’ Park rather than elsewhere, and it’s fair to assume the club agrees with his mindset.
