Jarrod Bowen’s performance for West Ham United against Fulham won’t make many headlines but Declan Rice was right to celebrate it.
Bowen has been criticised by West Ham United fans recently, with many of the belief that the skipper has dropped below his usual standards.
However and while the England international has had better games for West Ham, the excellent Bowen responded to those critics with a fine display at Craven Cottage.

After the game, he posted a collage of images from the game on Instagram and captioned it: “+3.”
Rice, who made 142 appearances alongside Bowen for West Ham, responded with: “Come on!”
Indeed, such was the magnitude of the victory, it’s worth taking a deeper look at Bowen’s statistics from the game.

While West Ham’s winning goal in their 1-0 victory over Fulham was all about the composure that Crysensio Summerville showed when a chance was presented to him following a defensive mix up from Fulham.

However, the pressure that Bowen put on former teammate Issa Diop in the build-up to that goal cannot be overlooked. Without him, it simply doesn’t happen.
In total, Bowen created three chances against the Cottagers, while making ten defensive contributions.

He may well have done better with a chance in the 29th-minute when he skewed wide from a tight angle when cutting inside looked like a better option but this was a performance full of industry.
Bowen has produced classier performances but his display on a foggy night in west London was full of grit and determination.
That was some way to respond to mounting criticism.

West Ham do not need to play pretty football right now and there is a certain beauty in the grit they showed at Craven Cottage.
It’s not all that long ago, of course, that supporters here in east London were questioning the character of the team.
Now, however, West Ham can win ugly. Bowen himself admits that the assist he recorded on Wednesday night was not the most aesthetically pleasing.
Speaking to West Ham’s official YouTube channel after the game, he said: “Probably not one of my greatest assists, just a little toe-poke to Cry but, again, it was just trying to chase a ball in behind and try and make something happen.
“Cause uncertainty and hand it off to Cry, who did the rest.”
If West Ham stay up this season, Bowen’s importance to the cause cannot be questioned.
