Part of a Leicester park will be cleared to allow developers to build 20 homes.

Leicester City Council has approved plans to build the homes at Western Park, in Hinckley Road, on land currently occupied by the old Constance Jackson Centre, Parkfield and Club House and a car park.

As well as the homes, a meeting place, access road, car parking, landscaping and a ‘forum’ building will also be built.

There will be two two-bed homes, 12 three-bed and six four-bed homes

The impact the houses will have on the area has been examined in the proposal, which said the character and appearance of the park, particularly upon arrival through the Hinckley Road gates, could be affected.

When the application was discussed in 2022, a report stated that members of the council’s Conservation Advisory Panel were “disappointed by the design of the proposed dwellings, which they felt lacked architectural quality and did not do enough to reflect the special character of the area.

The report added: “They felt the opportunity to produce a fresh design to express the environmental credentials of the scheme had been missed.

“While they appreciated that the applicant had drawn on the surrounding Arts and Crafts character to inform their design, the members agreed that there was a lack of attention to detail and it lacked proper craftsmanship.

“Members also expressed some concerns with the layout, which they felt was underwhelming and over-engineered.”

Council officials said that any tree that dies, becomes seriously damaged or is removed during construction will need to be replaced in the same position in the first available planting season.

Three collisions have occurred near the future entrance to the houses in Hinckley Road in the last five years, but it was decided that there are no significant highway safety issues in the area.

The proposal for the 20 homes was approved late last month. It was first submitted in November 2022.
