Jacob Ramsey was sent off in first-half stoppage time during Newcastle United’s Premier League victory over Manchester United on Wednesday night

Premier League referee Peter Bankes has been told he made the wrong call sending Jacob Ramsey off against Manchester United. The Newcastle United midfielder was given his marching orders in first-half stoppage time after picking up a second booking for an apparent dive.
The decision left Newcastle’s players and supporters outraged. Ramsey’s first booking came about following his first foul of the match in the middle of the pitch.
And although Newcastle went on to win the game 2-1 thanks to William Osula’s superb late winner, Ramsey’s red card was a huge talking point post-match. And when discussing it on Match of the Day 2, Micah Richards and Danny Murphy both felt referee Bankes had made the wrong call.
Kicking things off, presenter Mark Chapman said: “Just because you fall over doesn’t mean you’ve dived.” Replying, Richards said: “He just loses balance, doesn’t he? That’s all it is. You can see here when the ball goes through, he makes a terrific run and the keeper may or may not have touched him.
“But he just loses balance, it’s as simple as that. It’s not a second yellow card. He didn’t deserve to get sent off.”

To which Chapman said: “He also doesn’t appeal for it. He sort of lies there and gets up.” Giving his view, Murphy then said: “Look, I’m all for simulation, I think it’s the best thing we can do. But that is harsh. He’s not trying to get a penalty, he doesn’t accentuate his movement, he just loses his balance.”
Despite going down to 10-men, Newcastle took the lead through Anthony Gordon before Casemiro drew the Red Devils late into first-half stoppage time. However, Osula struck in the 90th minute to send his side’s supporters wild.
And speaking after the game, he revealed: “I was training that yesterday in the training drill. I only had one thing on my mind, thank God it went in. I know I can take the players on and have end product.

“It was testing my pace a bit that ball in behind, but I got there and happy with my end product.
“I was doing it yesterday and I was pretty consistent. It’s true that habit pays off. It’s so loud in this stadium, St James’ Park. It’s the best fanbase in the world. It’s top.”
While Magpies boss Howe said: “An amazing night. It was a great performance all the way through. 11 v 11 or 11 v 10. I thought we deserved to win.
“The main emotion was trying to work out how we’d play in that second half. We wanted to regroup. I thought Jacob Ramsey’s sending off was really harsh. I don’t think he’s looking for a penalty there.
