Jarell Quansah has been linked with a return to Liverpool recently, but a move in 2026 did not make any sense.

After reports of Liverpool wanting Quansah back, we suggested a transfer made little sense.

The centre-back left Anfield to play more, and returning when Virgil van Dijk and Ibrahima Konate were still at the club meant that was going to be very unlikely, but his buy-back clause not being active until 2027 could change that.

However, David Lynch has now shared that Liverpool’s buy-back clause is not expected to be active until the summer of 2027.

He explained: “Yeah, the impression I was given that it was maybe two seasons he’d have to be there before the clause was active, and what would surprise me about this, I mean, you never say never in football, I guess.

“But I know personally that Quansah was quite keen to go at the point he did it was very much him pushing for a move to go and play football more regularly, which of course he’s absolutely achieved while he’s out there and he’s doing really well.

“So for him to come back to Liverpool they’d have to be saying to him well, there’s a starting spot for you here and I’m not sure that’s where Liverpool are up to at the moment.”

What is the cause of Liverpool’s historically bad late-game management? 👀

Is it complacency, lack of focus, or are they just rattled beyond repair?

Wolves’ injury-time winner is the fifth against Liverpool this season — the most in PL history 😬

In turn, it means Quansah is a ready-made replacement for the ageing Van Dijk.

The Dutchman will be 35 next year, and he is due to be out of contract at the end of June 2027.

Behind Konate and Van Dijk, Liverpool have Giovanni and Jeremy Jacquet as long-term centre-back options.

But both are still young and lack a lot of experience at a high level.

In turn, Liverpool should be aiming to sign a direct, ready-made replacement for Van Dijk, and Quansah’s buy-back clause coming into effect from 2027 means it makes a lot of sense for him to be brought back then, and not this year as had previously been suggested.

What’s more, the Englishman already knows the Premier League and Liverpool well, with Alexis Mac Allister calling him ‘amazing’ previously.

As a result, the time he would need to settle in at Anfield if he moves in 2027 would almost certainly be a lot less than any other potential Van Dijk alternative.
