One year after launching in January 2025, Liv Life Liverpool, a commissioned partner of Liverpool City Council, is celebrating a year of life-changing impact across the city.

Created with local residents, the service supports people to achieve and maintain a healthy weight through compassionate, long-term support.

In its first year:

1,100+ residents have accessed the service

78% have lost at least 3% of their body weight

46% have lost at least 5%

At a time when 63% of adults in Liverpool are living with excess weight, Liv Life Liverpool is helping to slow the trend instead focusing on confidence, habits and sustainable change rather than stigma or short-term fixes.

For Michael*, one of the first residents to access one-to-one coaching, the journey has been transformational. He has lost over a stone and a half but says the biggest change has been his mindset.

“After coaching I genuinely see food differently. It’s not the enemy, it’s something to enjoy, but in a way that works for my life. I can’t thank Liv Life Liverpool enough. It’s not just about the weight I lost; it’s about the life I’ve gained,” shared Michael*.

With one in four children also starting school overweight or obese, Liv Life Liverpool is also working with families and schools to build healthier habits from a young age.

Through partnership work with Beautiful New Beginnings, family cooking and healthy living sessions are already making an impact.

A Liverpool headteacher said: “Liv Life Liverpool have made a huge impact on our school; their cooking sessions have allowed families to connect and cook healthier meals. In turn we have had meaningful discussions in school around healthy eating and packed lunches.”

Liv Life Liverpool forms part of the city’s wider ambition to create a Fairer, Healthier Liverpool, complementing the Good Food Plan and taking a whole-system approach to tackling obesity.

Cabinet Member for Culture, Health and Wellbeing, Cllr Harry Doyle, said:

“Supporting residents to make sustainable, long-term improvements to their health is central to our commitment to improving wellbeing across the city. The impact of Liv Life Liverpool in its first year shows what can be achieved when communities are at the heart of delivery.”

Director of Public Health for Liverpool City Council, Professor Matthew Ashton, added:

“We must move away from stigma and towards a whole-system approach to tackling obesity. The positive outcomes from year one show that this approach is working.”

As Liv Life Liverpool enters its second year, the focus remains clear: supporting more residents, reducing inequalities and helping people not just lose weight but gain healthier, happier lives.
