It has been confirmed that some classrooms at Winton Primary School were placed under a partial lockdown last week, due to a pupil behaving in a threatening manner with cutlery from the site’s canteen.
Some parents have expressed their frustration that they weren’t made aware of the incident until their children told them after the school day had finished, with one parent adding that children seem ‘terrified’ to return.
Following the incident, the school sent out a letter to parents on March 1 explaining that the pupil was threatening and abusive to others but not physically violent.
Kate James, the school’s acting headteacher, said: “There was an incident on Friday during which a pupil became upset and behaved in a threatening manner having taken a piece of cutlery from the canteen. A small number of classrooms were locked so students were not disrupted and teaching could continue.
“Staff immediately assessed the situation as low risk and it was quickly contained. No one was hurt and parents of the children directly involved were contacted the same afternoon.
“The matter has been treated with the utmost seriousness and we are working with the relevant agencies. Support has been offered to all those who might require it.”
