Manchester United have been they can win the Premier League with Bruno Fernandes but must avoid signing three England stars.

The club have enjoyed a renaissance under Michael Carrick and currently sit third in the table with an 11-game unbeaten streak. With each win comes a tighter grip on Champions League qualification as the United fanbase begin to believe foundations for a possible title charge next season are being put in place.

A key aspect of that is Fernandes, who is a contender for PFA Player of the Year with seven goals and 13 assists to his name in just 25 league games. The captain, 31, is under contract until 2028 but speculation surrounding a possible summer exit has continued.

While the Portuguese star is expected to make a decision on his future at the end of the season, keeping hold of the midfielder and rejecting moves for Cole Palmer, Jude Bellingham and Morgan Rogers should be on United’s agenda, according to club icon Bryan Robson.

Speaking to Boyle Sports, the former United captain said: “Cole Palmer, Jude Bellingham and Morgan Rogers are all very, very good players but these lads are all attacking players. I think in the midfield area Manchester United need a really top player who can defend and pass the ball well. I think that’s the type of player we need.

“Because of the signings like this year, with Sesko up front and Bruno in midfield, all those players, Palmer, Bellingham and Rogers, they have got great ability and great pace but they’re not what United need.”

With just an FA Cup and Carabao Cup to his name, questions have been asked on whether Fernandes can lead United to a Premier League title. But Robson has belief in Fernandes given his experience and determination.

The 69-year-old explained: “Bruno Fernandes is a top player. He can do things on a football pitch other people can’t. He creates chances for people. He scores great goals. I think his attitude is spot on. He’s a great lad around the club.

“I was 33 when we won the FA Cup, then we went on to win the League Cup, we won the European Cup Winners’ Cup, and then we won the title, and then we won the double. I was 33 when that all started up so when people keep talking about age.

“You can win a lot of things if you challenge yourself and keep yourself really fit. If you’ve got the experience then you can help people around you and I think Bruno can do that. The way Manchester United are playing at the moment.”
