On Saturday, February 28, the US and Israel launched strikes targeting Iran’s missile infrastructure, military sites and senior leaders.

Iran launched retaliatory strikes across the region including on an RAF in Cyprus.

The prime minister has announced that the US would be allowed to use British military bases for defensive strikes.

Tom Hayes Bournemouth East Mp House Of Commons

Bournemouth East MP Tom Hayes said: “In yet another reminder of how fragile our world has become, the Government is responding to strikes on Iran and to Iran’s attacks on Israel, Gulf cities, and our RAF base in Cyprus.

“I won’t mourn a supreme leader who brutalised his people and sponsored terrorism on our country. At the same time, I do not want Britain to be drawn into this conflict. Our involvement must be limited strictly to defensive action, as we encourage a negotiated peace in time.

“I am deeply concerned about the potential economic fallout as well as the security situation. Inflation and interest rates had been falling sharply, Government borrowing was dropping. The economy was picking up, and we were beginning to turn a corner even in the face of tariff threats from President Trump.”

Vikki Slade House Of Commons Portrait

Mid Dorset and North Poole MP Vikki Slade said: “Developments in Iran and the wider Middle East are deeply worrying. Whilst it is accepted across the world that the supreme leader of Iran led a truly awful regime, and that it would be unthinkable for Iran to have nuclear weapons, it is unclear that the USA was under immediate threat.

“With counter-strikes now impacting on British people, and UK military bases it is critical that this does not spread into a broader conflict.

“The prime minister must not allow the UK to be drawn into another prolonged conflict in the Middle East, following the lead of America.”

Jessica Toale Bournemouth West Mp House Of Commons

Bournemouth West MP Jessica Toale said: “I know many people in BCP will be concerned about the situation in the Middle East. Safety of British citizens is a top priority, and the government is working at pace to support the 300,000 British nationals in the region.

“I would encourage everyone affected to make themselves known to the relevant embassy so that you have access to all the latest information.

“Anyone with family affected in the region should sign up to FCDO travel alerts, and you can contact your MP if you need any additional consular support.”
