Liverpool’s potential summer transfer activity has dominated discussions in recent days. Despite last summer’s outlay reaching a record £450million, Arne Slot’s squad are anticipated to approach the forthcoming winter window with ambitions to strengthen multiple positions within the team.

Further departures could be set in motion with the contractual situations of Ibrahima Konate and Andy Robertson remaining unresolved. It may prove another summer of transition for the reigning Premier League champions, but reports of a remarkable reunion could see a familiar face making a return to Anfield.

We explore the latest stories emerging from Merseyside, including a “very complicated” transfer involving former Reds manager Jurgen Klopp.

Now an integral player for the reigning Premier League champions, there was a period when Ryan Gravenberch could scarcely secure game time during his unsuccessful spell at Bayern Munich.

After merely one season in Bavaria, the midfielder was lured away from the club by Jurgen Klopp and became the German’s final-ever acquisition on deadline day in 2023.

Despite cementing himself as one of the world’s finest young midfielders at Ajax, his career stalled at Bayern, with former manager Julian Nagelsmann examining the reasons why Gravenberch was unable to establish himself at the German powerhouse before Klopp sealed his signature for Liverpool.

Speaking to Kicker, Nagelsmann said: “You have to pay extremely close attention to how a player handles being 15th or 16th in our squad, even though he’s considered a top-six player at his club, someone who always plays. Let me give you an example from my time at Bayern Munich.

“Ryan Gravenberch is a top-class player, he already was at Bayern, but the situation was very complicated for him after his transfer from Ajax. Leon Goretzka and Joshua Kimmich were ahead of him in the pecking order, and I had also promoted Aleksandar Pavlovic.”

The Germany national team manager acknowledged that the responsibilities Gravenberch was given at Bayern didn’t suit his natural playing style. He added: “Ryan’s task was to step up his game in the last 20 minutes, but that’s not his style of play.

“Ryan is a player who needs consistent rhythm throughout the match. And then there are players you can bring on for 20 minutes, either to maintain a result or to desperately score a goal. They can give their all and leave everything on the pitch in those 20 minutes.”

Despite offloading Jarell Quansah last summer, Liverpool are said to be considering a move to bring back the England international. Following his £35m transfer to Bayer Leverkusen, the 23-year-old has become a regular fixture in the side and has already clocked up 32 matches across all competitions, finding the net four times.

Sky Germany has reported that the Reds will trigger a €80m (£69.7m) buy-back clause this summer. However, conflicting reports suggest that the clause does not become active until 2027, meaning an arrangement may need to be negotiated with Leverkusen if Liverpool aim to sign him this summer.
