Chelsea are set for a reunion with their former loanee Jadon Sancho when they take on Aston Villa this Wednesday.

Sancho spent the 2024/25 season on loan at Chelsea before returning to Manchester United and eventually joining Villa for this campaign.

With Sancho departing and Mykhailo Mudryk suspended, the Blues decided to buy both Alejandro Garnacho and Jamie Gittens. So how do they compare to Sancho?

Why has Alejandro Garnacho been such an unpopular signing? 🤯

Sancho did not pull up any trees during his time at Chelsea, but he did have some impactful moments.

For example, the winger was able to score in Chelsea’s Conference League final against Real Betis.

In the Premier League, most Chelsea fans would say that Sancho was pretty average, yet his stats last season are better than what Garnacho and Gittens are currently posting.

In 31 games, Sancho scored three goals and provided four assists. Right now, Garnacho sits on one goal and three assists, while Gittens is yet to find the back of the net. However, the 21-year-old has provided two assists.

There is plenty of time for both players to match and surpass Sancho’s tally of goal contributions — though Gittens is currently out injured — but Chelsea fans would have expected way more from the exciting duo by this point.

Based on those numbers, the recruitment staff at Cobham cannot really argue that Garnacho and Gittens have been upgrades on Sancho.

Sancho’s dribbling while he was in a blue shirt was also better. According to WhoScored, he completed 1.5 dribbles per game, while Garnacho and Gittens are only averaging 0.6 and 0.8 respectively.

The Villa man had a higher average for key passes as well, 1.2 to Garnacho’s one and Gittens’ 0.6.

Chelsea actually wanted to keep Sancho, but the England international’s wage demands proved to be a stumbling block. Had the Club World Cup winners managed to keep hold of him, it is very unlikely that they would have signed both Garnacho and Gittens.
