Manchester United can strengthen grip on Champions League qualification with a win over Newcastle.

A shock loss for Liverpool has opened up an even brighter outlook for Manchester United if we can beat Newcastle on March 4.

Liverpool’s shock defeat to 20th placed Wolves means Manchester United can move six points ahead of them.

Liverpool lost 2-1 at Molineux to Wolves as the relegation-threatened team continued their improved run of results.

They had recently held Arsenal to a 2-2 draw and also beat Aston Villa 2-0.

Another notable fixture taking place on March 4 is Aston Villa’s home fixture against Chelsea.

For Manchester United it is win-win. One rival for a Champions League spot will be dropping points – possibly both.

United are level on points with Villa at present, ahead on goal difference. We are six points ahead of Chelsea.

This means that if United beat Newcastle and Villa beat Chelsea, we could end the week nine points clear of sixth place.

United must beat Newcastle

None of this changes the task at hand for Michael Carrick’s Manchester United, only the reward.

United are taking on Newcastle in a tough away fixture, looking for a first victory at St. James’ Park since 2020/21.

Newcastle are down in 13th place and lost at home to Everton in their last fixture. They are dealing with a number of injuries, which has left them 15 points behind Manchester United.

A win will consolidate our grip on third position and a top five spot, which will likely secure Champions League qualification.

The next match after Newcastle is a home fixture against Aston Villa, followed by Bournemouth away.
