Manchester United’s push to extend their unbeaten Premier League run has been dealt a setback ahead of the trip to Tyneside.

With Carrick’s side currently riding momentum in his second interim spell – having built on his previous two wins and a draw with a six win, one-draw surge this year – squad availability has become increasingly crucial.

However, defensive concerns continue to mount.

Carrick has now confirmed that Lisandro Martinez will not be fit for the clash with Newcastle United at St James’ Park.

The Argentine picked up a minor issue ahead of the Everton fixture and was also absent for the 2-1 win over Crystal Palace.

Speaking to club media, Carrick admitted: “He won’t be with us. He’s not quite ready for that.”

The absence of Martinez leaves United light at the back, particularly with Harry Maguire also facing a late fitness assessment after illness.

Maguire was substituted against Palace and is being given “every chance” to recover, though no final decision has been made.

The situation could open the door for young defender Ayden Heaven, who did start alongside Leny Yoro in Ruben Amorim’s final game in charge.

Interestingly, Heaven posted an Instagram story showing a tackle on Newcastle forward Woltemade – a subtle hint that he may expect involvement again.

With Martinez ruled out and Maguire’s availability uncertain, Carrick may once more rely on youthful energy in defence.

Given United’s ongoing midfield rebuild plans following Casemiro’s confirmed summer exit and the club’s broader structural reshuffle off the pitch, maintaining stability on it is vital.

Carrick’s resurgence has been impressive – but Newcastle away presents a significant test as the Red Devils look to strengthen their bid to qualify for the UEFA Champions League, particularly with defensive depth stretched thin.
