Wolves secured back-to-back Premier League victories with a stunning, late win over defending Premier League champions Liverpool under the Molineux lights.
After an uneventful first half, the second period proved a complete contrast, and a chaotic final 15 minuets were kicked off by Rodrigo Gomes, whose brilliant finish put Wolves ahead, before Mohamed Salah equalised seven minutes from time.
However, the night belonged to Wolves who responded again. Andre’s strike in the fourth minute of injury time took a sizeable deflection to beat Alisson and spark huge scenes of celebration.
Back at the started, both sides settled quickly, but it was the visitors who registered the game’s first attempt. Cody Gakpo won possession high up the pitch and fired towards goal, but the Wolves shot stopper was equal to the Dutchman’s powerful effort.
Despite early signs of dominance from Liverpool, Wolves were eager to wrestle back momentum, with their new-look midfield central to proceedings in the opening 20 minutes.
As the half wore on, Liverpool began to assert greater authority, limiting Wolves to no shots at goal in the first half. However, Edwards’ side remained disciplined in defence, preventing Sa from being called into significant action.
The visitors stayed on the front foot and created a pair of chances approaching the interval. First, Dominik Szoboszlai struck from distance, but Sa was well positioned to gather comfortably.
Moments later, Jackson Tchatchoua defended well to block Gakpo’s dangerous strike from inside the penalty area, bringing a close to an uneventful, but well-fought first-half from Wolves.
Half-time | Wolves 0-0 Liverpool
Liverpool began the second half as they had ended the first – on the front foot – and nearly took the lead. Hugo Ekitike flicked on from a corner, embroiling chaos in the penalty area as it found Curtis Jones, whose improvised, chest-controlled effort crashed off the crossbar, before Wolves were finally able to clear their lines.
The visitors continued to dominate after the restart, prompting Edwards to attempt a swing in momentum by introducing Tolu Arokodare, Jean-Ricner Bellegarde and Yerson Mosquera.
The reinforcements appeared to have taken the sting out of Liverpool’s play, with Wolves beginning to find their rhythm again for the first time in the second half, though it still failed to produce a shot at goal by the end of it.
With the final 10 minutes approaching, two Wolves substitutes combined to break the deadlock with the home side’s first attempt of the evening. Arokodare did superbly to hold the ball up before threading Rodrigo Gomes through on goal, and he lifted the ball over Alisson to find the back of the net.
Minutes after the restart, Sa produced a magnificent save, tipping Rio Ngumoha’s effort onto the post to deny an equaliser. However, the hard work would soon be undone.
Salah capitalised on a loose ball in the Wolves midfield, surged towards goal and struck low and hard to beat Sa and restore parity.
Proceedings grew chaotic and transitional as the clock ticked on, with both sides threatening to find the elusive winner. Mosquera went through on goal and had an effort denied, before Virgil Van Dijk watched his headed effort land in the gloves of Sa.
However, Molineux soon erupted in the dying moments when Andre produced the all important winning goal. The Brazilian struck from range and, with help via a deflection, watched his effort bounce into the back of the net, securing Wolves a monumental three points at Molineux.
