Kobbie Mainoo’s representatives and Manchester United continue to have ‘lingering issues’ despite Ruben Amorim’s departure from the club. The young midfielder has fewer than 18 months left on his deal with minimal indication of progress at present.
Mainoo emerged as a regular in Erik ten Hag’s side as a teenager during 2023/24 but struggled to secure playing time under Amorim. The academy graduate was refused a loan transfer prior to this campaign and has historically attracted attention from Chelsea.
It was only during January that Mainoo received his maiden Premier League start of the season, following Michael Carrick’s assumption of control at Old Trafford. The 20-year-old has featured for the full duration in the top flight seven times since, establishing himself as a cornerstone of the United manager’s lineup.
That might not prove advantageous in any subsequent discussions regarding fresh terms, though. Mail Online reports that Mainoo accepted a compromise on revised wages but received no response from the club until Amorim’s dismissal.
It remains uncertain now, given Mainoo’s elevated status, whether those conditions will satisfy the player’s representatives. However, he appears more content with his new role, and there is believed to be a ‘substantially greater likelihood’ of him remaining at the club with a fresh contract.

Nevertheless, Carrick has placed considerable confidence in the youngster and has enjoyed the benefits. United’s manager is quite simply an enormous admirer of the England international.
“We forget how young he still is,” Carrick remarked last month. “I was just a big fan of watching him play and knowing what he was capable of.
“So it wasn’t really a big decision to play him. And, to be fair, it’s not easy when you haven’t played to find your rhythm and find your form.

“There are things he can get better at, things he can improve on, but we haven’t really got started on any of that because we’re just letting him go and find his flow and find his rhythm of playing football again.
“I’ve been really conscious of not giving him an awful lot – a couple of little pointers, a bit of positional things and some little bits here and there – but trust in what he is. He’s a fantastic footballer and he’s got a huge talent.”
Mainoo’s colleague, Diogo Dalot, reckons the midfielder will gain from his challenging spell under Amorim.
Dalot commented: “How can you explain to a 20-year-old guy that you need to go back to what you did before – train hard, be humble, just wait for your opportunity? I don’t think that’s bad for him to pass through this experience.
“You might say he should have played a little bit more, or not, that might be your opinion, or not. But for him to go through that experience, I think it will benefit him for the future.”
