The 19-year-old academy prospect replaced Mathias Kvistgaarden up front in the second half, and had a key part to play in Ali Ahmed’s match-sealing strike, 10 minutes after Anis Ben Slimane had thumped Norwich in front.

Mundle-Smith reacted quickest to Kellen Fisher’s initial blocked cross to swivel and clip a cross shot deflected into the path of Ahmed arriving at the back post.

“Errol, who’s normally a winger out of the academy, no experience in the Championship, and he does the role really well for the team,” said Clement. “Those are the nice moments. I’m happy for him, because he’s been working really hard. It’s just the start of his career. We have a lot of young guys,, by far the youngest squad in the Championship.

“There are a lot of stories starting in Norwich, and I’m really curious where the stories will end in a few years, or in 10 or 15 years, but for the moment they’re all on their toes.

“We have a lot of examples like that from the past few months, and that’s the strength of this squad. It’s clear what they need to do with and without the ball against different systems. But they do it with confidence, and they feel happy.”

Ahmed raced away to celebrate in front of the packed away end, but Clement himself was a reluctant cheerleader at the final whistle.

The head coach joked in his post-match media captain Kenny McLean was set for some over-time this week, after he found himself conducting the packed away support in the now customary full-time scenes to savour a fifth away league win of 2026.

“You see a lot of joy on the pitch. You see also, and I’m really happy about it, a lot of joy next to the pitch with our fans enjoying the way we play football,” said Clement. “It’s now about keeping everybody on their toes and to be ambitious to make the story better and better. I don’t like that part too much (being the centre of attention), you know, but Kenny tricked me.

“We would do it together, and then suddenly he disappeared and left me to lead the cheers, so players will have maybe Thursday off, but I think Kenny needs to be in the building.

“It’s a big difference with three months ago. That’s clear for everybody, but that’s also because of the work of everybody, from the players, but also all my staff really working very hard every day to go into all the details with the players.

“And you see they respond well. This group is responding really well, and with players playing also out of position in some cases.”
