There was significant doubt over whether the 24-year-old could make City’s squad for the trip to the King Power Stadium, but after warming up and speaking with captain Kenny McLean, he told Clement he was fit enough to feature in some capacity.
It turned out to be inspired: Slimane came off the bench for the final 30 minutes to put City ahead, with Ali Ahmed netting a second to secure three precious points as they took a huge step towards securing their Championship status.
“I had some problems with my groin, but I think big Philippe gets what he wants, innit? I can’t really regret it now,” the midfielder said.
“I really wanted to help the team and spoke to the skipper Kenny McLean as well, who motivated me to get on the pitch. I’m super happy that I ended up being on the pitch and could help the team today with three points.”
Any Slimane absence would have compounded an injury situation that has left Norwich without 14 senior players.
His introduction sparked City’s surge that led to their fourth win in five on the road. It was the Tunisian’s 10th goal contribution in 12 matches under Philippe Clement, who has rejuvenated his career at the Canaries after he had been out of favour previously.
City’s impressive victory moved them 11 points clear of the relegation zone and Slimane said their intensity helped turn control into goals.
“It has been some crazy 24 hours, but I think the lads put in really, really good work in the first half,” Slimane told Sky Sports. “When we came in (for half time), everyone was happy, and we agreed to go on in the second half and keep pushing and keep pushing because we knew that there would be chances there.
“For me, warming up, watching the game, I couldn’t wait to come on the pitch and just make an impact.
“Thankfully, it didn’t take so long, but we got the goal, and I’m super, super happy and proud of the lads for this shift today.”
