Two Premier League sides with European ambitions meet at St James’ Park on Saturday as Newcastle United host Everton. The Magpies will be looking to repeat their emphatic 4-1 away victory over Everton from November, which marked their first league win on the road this season.

Newcastle are in high spirits, having won four of their last five matches in all competitions and netting 15 goals along the way. Their only recent setback was a narrow 2-1 Premier League loss to Manchester City. The Magpies have also progressed in both the FA Cup and Champions League, recently defeating Qarabag FK 9-3 on aggregate to reach the Champions League last 16 for the first time in their history.

Before turning their attention to a European tie against either Chelsea or Barcelona, Eddie Howe’s men are focused on climbing the Premier League table. They currently sit 11th, nine points off sixth-placed Liverpool. However, Newcastle have struggled in the league lately, losing four of their last five games and averaging just 1.33 points per match—Howe’s lowest rate since his Bournemouth days. They’ll be eager to avoid a third straight home league defeat, something they haven’t experienced since early 2021, and to complete a league double over Everton for the sixth time.

Everton, meanwhile, have had mixed results since their FA Cup exit in January, with two wins, two draws, and two losses in their last six league games. Consecutive home defeats to Bournemouth and Manchester United have left them ninth in the table, just one point ahead of Newcastle. The Toffees haven’t lost three league games in a row since January 2025, and not under David Moyes since 2011.

Despite recent setbacks, Everton have been strong away from home, collecting the second-most away points in the league since Moyes returned in January last year, and conceding fewer than a goal per away game in that span. They won this fixture 1-0 last season and are aiming for back-to-back away victories at St James’ Park for the first time since 2012-14.

Newcastle vs Everton

Newcastle midfielder Jacob Ramsey is a doubt after missing the midweek win over Qarabag with a minor hamstring issue. The Magpies are also without Bruno Guimaraes and Tino Livramento (both hamstring), Fabian Schar (ankle), Lewis Miley (thigh), and Emil Krafth (knee). If Ramsey is unavailable, Sandro Tonali, Joelinton, Joe Willock, or Nick Woltemade could fill in, with Woltemade also an option up front alongside Yoane Wissa, who returned from a minor knock to feature as a substitute against Qarabag. Anthony Gordon, formerly of Everton, could also be deployed as a central striker, despite only three of his 14 goals this season coming in the Premier League. Malick Thiaw, who scored twice against Everton earlier in the campaign, is expected to return to the defense after serving a Champions League suspension.

For Everton, Jack Grealish (foot) and Carlos Alcaraz (unspecified) are sidelined, while backup keeper Mark Travers faces a late fitness test due to a wrist/hand injury. Jake O’Brien is available again after suspension and should return at right-back, joining James Tarkowski, Michael Keane, and either Jarrad Branthwaite or Vitaliy Mykolenko in defense. James Garner is set to move back into midfield alongside Idrissa Gueye and Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall, who leads Everton for goal involvements in Premier League away games this season (four—three goals, one assist).
