Saints will spend plenty of time on the road with their next four games to be played away from home, adding to their travel load and reducing training time.

They face the longest away trip of the bunch this weekend with a game at Sheffield Wednesday, before visits to Fulham, West Brom and Coventry.

Eckert is confident Saints can navigate this unusual test and pointed to the club’s fantastic medical department and facilities as an edge over their rivals.

“When we’ve played a game, the day after, we have a group of players that haven’t played as many minutes out on the pitch, and another group that does recovery,” he explained.

“I’m normally out with the players that train. I just happened to pop in the other day on the recovery group, and I think the setup that we have is outstanding.

“I think what separates us at the moment from other clubs is that the recovery is just spot on. I think, especially at this part of the season, that’s what we need.

“Even more than a technical master plan to come up against games, but just players that are fit and available. The performance and medical teams are doing a good job.

“Recovery starts from the minute that the game is over. No beers, no wine on the bus, but make sure that we’re ready to go for the next game.”

Southampton’s players are aided with their recovery on bus journeys back to the south coast through the use of supporting technology that quickens the process.

Saints handed additional days off to the players “near their limit” on the weekend of their 2-1 FA Cup win over Leicester City.

It allowed the likes of Flynn Downes, Leo Scienza and Taylor Harwood-Bellis to recouparate ahead of the final stretch of the Championship season.
