Brentford have rewarded Keith Andrews for his incredible start to life as a manager by handing him a six-and-a-half year extension to his contract.
The former Ireland midfielder on Thursday signed a new long-term contract tying him to the club until the summer of 2032.
Andrews was appointed last summer as the successor to Thomas Frank after the Dane left for Tottenham.
His promotion from set-piece coach raised plenty of eyebrows, given his lack of experience in the number one position.
Andrews has previously worked as an assistant manager at MK Dons and Sheffield United, and he was number two to Stephen Kenny in the senior Ireland set-up.
But few expected him to make such an impact at Brentford, particularly after their summer transfer window departures.
They lost some key players, including forwards Bryan Mbeumo to Manchester United and Yoane Wisse to Newcastle, midfielder Christian Norgaard to Arsenal, and goalkeeper Mark Flekken to Bayer Leverkusen.
Ireland netminder Caoimhin Kelleher had arrived from Liverpool shortly before Frank’s departure.
Despite the losses of key players from last season, Andrews has managed to guide Brentford to seventh in the Premier League table.
They made it to the quarter-finals of the League Cup and are away to West Ham in the fifth round of the FA Cup.
Brentford’s director of football Phil Giles hailed Andrews, saying: “When Keith accepted the job last summer, he signed a three-year contract, but the intention was always that we’d review this at the earliest opportunity.
“Given our progress this season, I’m really happy that we have agreed this extension within the first nine months.
“Keith has done an outstanding job, the team are playing well and the things we thought we could be better at this season have all improved.
“He is a really good fit for the club and the way we like to work, as he is able to bring the best out of both players and staff alike.
“Everyone at Brentford will be pleased to hear that Keith will be with us for many years to come, and I’m excited by what we can all achieve together in the coming seasons.”
