Former Swansea City coach Darren O’Dea has shared the Celtic reason he took in a mission to visit Brentford this season.

O’Dea made the move from Celtic to Swansea City earlier this season but that turned sour after the ex-Hoops coach left the Championship club after less than six months.

The Irishman was placed in temporary charge of Swansea after they sacked manager Alan Sheehan in November, but now he’s out of work, O’Dea has revealed a Celtic reason he visited Brentford while out of work.

You are the Celtic manager. What do you change for the rest of the season? 🤨

Brentford are one of the most progressive clubs in the English Premier League and have become an established club in the money-bags division.

And O’Dea has revealed he took in a coaching mission after learning from Brendan Rodgers and Ange Postecoglou at Celtic.

When asked if his visit to Brentford was worth it, O’Dea told The Go Radio Football Show, “Yeah, it was. It’s something I think all coaches do. You don’t naturally, when you’re in work, get a lot of time.

“So when you’re not, it’s part of learning, if you want to see that. And Brentford are a club that are obviously run a little bit differently. They’re a kind of unique club that have come through the leagues and now are doing exceptionally well in the Premier League.

“One of the reasons I wanted to go down was I’ve been around Celtic and a very kind of strong style of possession, if you want to call it that.

“So that style of play I’ve seen a lot of and the managers that I’ve seen in terms of Brendan and Ange who are exceptional and learned so much. But I want to see something completely different.”

Ex-Celtic coach Darren O’Dea’s ‘really good’ Brentford insight

O’Dea is clearly looking to develop his coaching style and knowledge, and it seems that after spending the vast majority of his coaching career at Celtic, Brentford has opened his eyes to some new coaching ideas.

“And yeah, it was fascinating,”, O’Dea continued, “I got real insight into all their meetings. Keith Andrews, obviously through my relationship with him, was brilliant to me. And so I got to see a bit of training. Their meetings, the way they did things day to day.

“And it was a really good insight. But just for me personally, it was just more to evolve and keep learning while you’re not in work.

“Because when you are not in work, you don’t get these opportunities.”
