Chelsea and Liverpool are set to be among the teams represented by their legends at the Masters Football tournament this spring. The contest is scheduled for May 31 at the OVO Arena in Wembley, London.

Iconic ex-players from Chelsea, Liverpool, Ajax, and Real Madrid will square off in front of a full house and a national television audience. The event’s promotional poster provides hints about potential participants for each team.

Premier League champion Loic Remy, depicted in his Chelsea kit, is one of those hinted at. The Frenchman played for the Blues from 2004 to 2017 before retiring in 2023 following his release from Brest.

Jermaine Pennant, who is expected to represent Liverpool, also features on the poster. Although the former winger didn’t clinch a major trophy during his time at Anfield, he was part of the Reds’ squad that fell to AC Milan in the 2007 Champions League final.

The poster also teases the involvement of Ivan Campo, who made a name for himself as a Premier League legend during his stint at Bolton. The Spaniard is anticipated to play for Real Madrid, where he secured the 2000 Champions League title.

Meanwhile, Jari Litmanen, who once donned the Liverpool jersey, could face his former club when he steps out in an Ajax shirt again.

Previous victors of the tournament include Chelsea, Liverpool, Manchester City, Nottingham Forest and Leicester. The last team to hoist the trophy was Scottish side Rangers, following their resounding 8-3 triumph over Leeds in the 2011 final.

Each six-a-side match will span 14 minutes and feature rolling substitutions, with a plethora of big-name players set to be announced for each squad in the coming months. The competition will utilise a round-robin format, with the top two teams progressing to the final.

Liverpool icon Robbie Fowler has previously elucidated on the event’s official website why it is so well-liked amongst former players.

He said: “The lads always have a great time with the Masters. The fans always come out in numbers and the matches are as intense as ever!

“You only need to see the quality of the teams nowadays to see how keen the players are to get involved”
