Wolverhampton Wanderers striker and Nigerian international Tolu Arokodare and Sunderland’s Romaine Mundle are the latest players to have experienced racial abuse in what was an abhorrent weekend in the Premier League.

The two players both received racist messages on social media following losses to Crystal Palace and Fulham respectively, in which Nigerian international Alex Iwobi scored.

Arokodare, who has registered 10 caps for the Super Eagles, had a first half penalty saved against Crystal Palace before Evann Guessand netted a 90th minute winner for the hosts.

The 25-year-old took to Instagram after receiving vile messages, stating on his story:

“It’s still unbelievable to me that we’re playing in a time where people have so much freedom to communicate such racism without any consequences.”

“These individuals should have no place in our game and collectively we have to take action to punish everyone who taints the sport like this, no matter who they are.”

Wolves released a statement affirming the club’s support for the player.

“Tolu has our full and unwavering support. No player should be subjected to such hatred simply for doing their job.

“We stand firmly alongside him, and alongside all footballers who are forced to endure this abuse from anonymous accounts acting with apparent impunity,” the club wrote.

Following Sunderland’s 3-1 loss to Fulham, the Black Cats also released a statement condemning the racist abuse and offering Mundle the club’s full support.

“The abhorrent behaviour displayed by multiple individuals is unacceptable and will not be tolerated by the Club under any circumstances.

“There is no place for racism in our society, and we stand with Romaine, who has our full support.”

Both clubs have stated they are working with the league and authorities to identify those responsible.

The abuses came just a day after Chelsea’s Wesley Fofana and Tunisian international and Burnley midfielder Hannibal Mejbri both received racial abuse following the 1-1 draw between their two sides at Stamford Bridge on Saturday.
