Gary Neville believes sacked Manchester United boss Ruben Amorim will have to rethink his approach for his next management role after watching Michael Carrick’s impressive transformation as interim manager

Gary Neville believes that Manchester United’s resurgence under Michael Carrick will force Ruben Amorim to ‘make a change’ when he returns to management. Carrick, 44, strengthened United’s top-four aspirations with another victory on Monday, as the Reds defeated Everton.
Amorim, 41, was sacked by United last month after a 1-1 draw at Leeds United and a spell of just one victory in five fixtures. He was succeeded by Darren Fletcher for a Premier League away match at Burnley and a home FA Cup tie against Brighton before Carrick was appointed as the club’s head coach until the end of the season.
The impact Carrick has made since returning to Old Trafford has been remarkable, with ex-Middlesbrough boss steering United to five wins and one draw in his opening six fixtures. United had secured four successive victories against Manchester City, Arsenal, Fulham and Tottenham before a 1-1 draw with West Ham ended that run earlier this month.

However, United responded and secured another victory by beating Everton 1-0 at the Hill Dickinson Stadium on Monday evening. The result has lifted them back up to fourth place, just three points adrift of third-placed Aston Villa and well positioned to secure a Champions League berth.
Upon his appointment, Carrick abandoned Amorim’s 3-4-2-1 formation in favour of a more straightforward 4-2-3-1, whilst also bringing Kobbie Mainoo back into the fold after his exclusion under the previous head coach.
Carrick has implemented several additional changes, including condensing training sessions to increase their intensity and pushing back arrival times by 15 minutes for both home and away fixtures.

It’s an approach that has proven effective so far, and former United defender Neville believes Carrick’s influence will force Amorim to reassess his methods ahead of his next managerial role. “Obviously, he (Amorim) got a number of things wrong when you look at what is happening now,” Neville told Sky Sports following the win against Everton.
“He did change the system a little bit in a couple of games and it looked like that could be a way forward. But against Wolves, he went back the way and that, for me, felt like the terminal blow for Ruben Amorim.
“Then you look at what happened with Kobbie Mainoo, you look at him playing out there with Casemiro and they look like a very competent pair. Kobbie Mainoo looks like a football player. He looks like he can play the position well, he looks like he can handle the ball, which he can, and he looks like he is back to his best. And that is something that stands out.

“The system of play, the injuries, AFCON, Harry Maguire coming back, the mood of Michael, the composure of Michael, maybe they like what they are seeing on the pitch, there are a number of things. But Ruben Amorim must be sat at home watching Manchester United, I don’t think he is a guy that will sit there and think, ‘I can’t believe this is happening’. He has worked with a lot of these players and the staff.
“But I think he might be sat there thinking, ‘what will I do differently in the future when I am in that same position again and I get another job. Maybe I am being a bit too stubborn and not quite making the changes that the players want.’”
Throughout his 14-month stint at the helm of United, Amorim claimed victory in just 24 of his 63 matches across all competitions. The Portuguese manager had, nonetheless, positioned the Reds as contenders for a Champions League spot, though Carrick has since propelled them into the top four and looks well placed to maintain that standing for the remainder of the campaign.
United’s next fixture sees them welcome Crystal Palace to Old Trafford on Sunday, before travelling to Newcastle United and then taking on Aston Villa in mid-March.
